CNNMoney heard from nine former students who said one of the primary reasons they enrolled at ITT was because they thought they'd be able to land a good job once they graduated. But they ultimately were never able to find work in their field. She found work with a security company, but wanted a job in law enforcement. When she couldn't land one, she went back to an ITT career counselor to ask for help. They suggested she re-enroll for her bachelor's degree, which she completed in June -- but still hasn't found a job as a police officer.

Related: What's next for ITT students? The Massachusetts Attorney General lawsuit alleges that ITT misled students about its job placement rates to get them to enroll. ITT has said some of the attorney general's claims "rest on a biased and selective portrayal of the facts. ACICS says that a job must require skills learned at school as a "predominant component of the job" in order to be counted. A lot of students spent years in school and thousands of dollars, only to find their degree would never land them a new job in their chosen field.

Because in many cases, the school's professional programs lacked the accreditation to work in those areas. For example, none of ITT's nursing programs had a nursing-specific accreditation.

Without the specific accreditation, a graduate can still sit for a licensing exam. During that period, the department said, ITT Tech lied about its financial health and misled students into taking on debt they couldn't repay. Students are usually eligible for loan forgiveness if they attended a college within days of its closure and were unable to complete their degrees.

That date, the agency said, is when ITT Tech's executives disclosed a scheme to hide the truth about the company's finances after the loss of outside funding. It led ITT Tech to shift more costs to students, the department said, and it prevented the company from making investments to provide a quality education.

ITT Tech shut down in after being hit with a series of sanctions by the Obama administration. Under the new action, eligible borrowers will automatically get their loans cleared if they did not attend another college within three years of the school's closure. This is the latest in a series of student loan discharges related to ITT Tech.

On Aug. Extending this window discharges federal student loans for , borrowers, 43 percent of whom are currently in default.

Former ITT Tech students have seen a few waves of student loan forgiveness this year. Borrower defense to repayment is a federal law that allows student loan borrowers to seek loan forgiveness if a college or university misled them or engaged in other misconduct in violation of certain state laws.

The department concluded that the school misled students about the likelihood of employment after graduation and the potential salaries that students could earn with a degree from ITT Tech. A lawsuit was filed after ITT Tech entered bankruptcy and closed its schools in That lawsuit affected students who attended ITT Tech from to , as well as other students who made payments after the company declared bankruptcy.

Under the settlement, federal student loans were discharged thanks to borrower defense to repayment. If you attended ITT Tech and have outstanding student loans, you may qualify for cancellation, discharge or a refund, depending on your loans and program status. Eligible federal student loan borrowers who left the school on or after March 31, , should look out for automatic loan discharge from the Department of Education in September.
